You can drive through Holbrook in about four minutes. The people who stop usually end up staying the whole day.

We’re the gateway to the Petrified Forest, an original stop on Route 66, and a town with a street named Bucket of Blood. That name was earned. The best part is that nearly all of it sits within a few blocks of each other, so you can see a lot without ever getting back in the car.

Start with the history. The Navajo County Historic Courthouse & Museum has been standing downtown since 1898, and yes, you can walk into the old jail cells. A block away, Bucket of Blood St. still carries the story that got Holbrook its reputation as the town too tough for women and churches.

Then the Mother Road. Route 66 turns 100 in 2026 and Holbrook has one of the most photographed stops on the whole route. Concrete teepees, old neon, murals, rock shops, and a few dinosaurs standing around town like they pay rent. Go back a little further. Petrified Forest National Park is 25 minutes east: petrified wood 200 million years in the making, Painted Desert overlooks, and hiking that doesn’t require being a hiker. Guided rock art tours nearby will put you in front of petroglyphs carved long before any of this was a town.

Stay a while. Hidden Cove Golf Course is nine holes with real desert views and no tee time drama. O’Dell Hidden Cove Park and the rest of the Holbrook parks are made for picnics, ball games, and letting the kids run it out. When the heat shows up, the Splash Pad and the Swimming Pool are the entire summer plan for a lot of Holbrook families.
